"More important than abstraction", the first contemporary art space of Bund Art Center opened.

Space 185 of Shanghai Bund Art Center is the first contemporary art space open to the public in the Bund Art Center under construction. The space is located at No.185, Sichuan Middle Road, the historical core of Shanghai Bund, about 400 meters away from the waterfront of the Bund. The building has a history of 120 years, and it is an excellent historical building of Renaissance residence style.
The Paper learned that on January 12th, Space 185 of Shanghai Bund Art Center ushered in its first exhibition, which was "more important than abstraction". The exhibition is a special abstract art exhibition jointly presented by curator Cui Cancan and eight domestic abstract artists with different styles. They come from different times and systems, including post-40 s and post-90 s, and each artist has a unique personal language and work path under the commonality of "abstract art"
Space 185 of Shanghai Bund Art Center has been integrated with modern and contemporary artistic elements in the overall design and transformation, while retaining the characteristics of Shanghai-style old buildings, so that ancient and modern styles can exchange and collide here. Walking into the art space, the design of fully-elevated vestibule and walkway floor tiles endows this excellent historical building with new and contemporary characteristics and keynote, and strengthens the characteristics of this art space.
"More Important than Abstraction" Exhibition Site
According to Cui Cancan, curator, eight different artists were invited for the first exhibition-they came from different times and systems, and their differences were far greater than their similarities, and they had completely different personal languages and work paths. In some ways, the antagonism and correction between these works became the motivation and original intention of artists to establish personal languages. "Their works are more or less inextricably linked with abstract art, but the core of this exhibition is not to establish a common connection to emphasize some kind of’ purity’, but to emphasize the important value of difference and complexity for personal creation." The curator said.
Ding Yi No.10 Exhibition 2022-2027 has five exhibition halls and a multi-function hall in the 240×240cm 2022 space carved with acrylic wood on the basswood board, with an exhibition area of about 600 square meters. Hall 1 shows two new works created by artist Ding Yi in 2022. The symbol of "ten" has been running through Ding Yi’s creation for nearly 40 years since the end of 1980s, but it has been constantly changing. These two works continue Ding Yi’s technique of acrylic woodcarving on the basswood board since 2015. The artist first draws multiple layers of conceptualised colors on the basswood board, and then reveals the desired colors in an ideal shape through carving in different shades and angles. The lines or shapes drawn on the top layer form the final picture. On the whole, the picture looks like the boundary between the sea and the sky, and it is like a constellation hanging in the air, which brings a certain imagination to the viewer.
The paintings of Tan Ping and Liang Quan are on display in Hall 20192 of acrylic 200x200cm 20192 canvas. Since Tan Ping returned from Germany in the 1990s, Tan Ping has returned to the discussion of the artistic noumenon of point, line and plane, which has extended from the basic element of art to multiple artistic styles, giving different scenes, situations and different spiritual attributes to point, line and plane. The two works created in 2019 in this exhibition clearly show the vivid vitality of the artist’s picture. Viewers can easily feel the energy of his brushwork in the tangled, contradictory and intertwined picture covered with layers of pigments. In the picture, brushwork, color, line, flat painting, graffiti, three-dimensional, structure and other language methods are mixed together, which activates the drama of the picture and reflects the people and the world that the artist feels at the moment of creation. A group of eight works exhibited by Liang Quan, like the title of his Eight Scenes of Xiaoxiang, have distinct regional elements.

Chen Wenji and Chen Mifan’s paintings are presented in Hall 2010-20123, which is a comprehensive technique of acrylic on canvas with a diameter of 180×180cm and a diameter of 103cm× 14cm. The former works are concerned with the change of color scale, the order and rhythm of colors, the subtle variables between colors and the influence of colors on emotions. The latter discusses the pure relationship between abstraction and objects from the relationship between China tradition and abstraction.
The size of Wang Yi’s primary structure resin can be changed from 2015 to 2022. After Hall 3, the corridor of Hall 4 presents two works by Wang Yi. Wang Yi is a post-90 s artist. Compared with the previous two generations of artists, his works are more fashionable and electronic, and he pays more attention to the relationship between electronics, light and abstraction under the influence of new media."On the top of Hall 5, we have retained the 120-year-old old wooden beam. Although the height of the floor is not very high, it has a unique sense of immersion. Eleven manuscripts, large and small, by the famous abstract artist Huang Yuanqing were exhibited in the exhibition hall. Several of them have a history of more than 20 years, and it is the first time that artists have taken them out for exhibition. " The curator said.
