Also known as the "giant panda in the water"
During the Spring Festival, Nanjing finless porpoise rescue monitors monitored a finless porpoise with a tail injury. On February 16th, Nanjing Yangtze finless porpoise provincial nature reserve management station and other relevant departments successfully fished it ashore under the guidance of the Yangtze River Basin Fishery Supervision and Administration Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. At present, the finless porpoise is receiving treatment and care in Nanjing Underwater World, and the specific condition and causes need further diagnosis. It is reported that the injured finless porpoise was successfully rescued in the main stream of the Yangtze River, which is the first case in China.
Jiang Meng, secretary-general of the Nanjing finless porpoise aquatic biology protection association, said that they found a finless porpoise with a tail injury when they inspected the Yangtze River Smile Station near Jiangbian South Road in Gulou on the second day of the New Year. "At that time, this finless porpoise swam very close to the shore, about 20 meters, and it was clear that its tail skin was injured and infected." Jiang Meng said, so they began to track and locate the finless porpoise. "The finless porpoise has been swimming. We must lock its range of activities and master its laws before we can consider further rescue plans."
In the next few days, the reserve management station organized rescue monitors, photographers and volunteers to protect the finless porpoise to search for the finless porpoise with a tail injury. With the cooperation of agriculture, rural areas, waterways, maritime affairs and other departments, the scope of its activities is basically locked in the waters near the Yangtze River Smile Station to Hongyun Bridge. On the fourth day of the Lunar New Year’s Day, the reserve management station held an emergency online expert seminar, and entrusted the Freshwater Fisheries Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences to mobilize six scientific research and monitoring vessels and related staff from Anqing, Dangtu, Anhui and Taizhou, Jiangsu, and assembled in Nanjing on the evening of February 15th.
At about 11 am on February 16, it was successfully caught ashore. On the rescue boat, Liu Kai, a researcher from the Freshwater Fisheries Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, who was in charge of the on-site search and rescue, made preliminary treatment and collected diagnostic samples for the finless porpoise wound, and then, with the cooperation of Nanjing traffic police, transferred it to Nanjing Underwater World for treatment and nursing.
By the afternoon of February 16th, the finless porpoise had completed wound disinfection, routine physical examination and B-ultrasound examination in Nanjing Underwater World, and had been put into the treatment pool for temporary maintenance, and was continuously observed and cared for by the expert team. Follow-up will be based on the examination results to develop the next treatment plan.
I wish our "smiling angel" a speedy recovery
